....·····.....·····/ \·····.....·····.... · . . · · . | Help on: Halfling | . · · . . · ····.....·····.....\ /.....·····.....···· Adjustments: +2 Dexterity, -2 Strength Compatible Classes: Assassin, Bard, Cleric (Kamira), Druid, Fighter, Monk, Ranger, Rogue, Thief, Fighter/Thief General Halflings are small, quick, and incredibly resourceful, known for their love of comfort, sharp wits, and natural gift for thievery. Often dismissed as harmless folk, they use their size and agility to outmaneuver larger races, whether in combat, gambling, or swiping coin purses. They are natural survivors, able to blend into crowds, vanish into shadows, and escape danger with uncanny ease. Despite their innate trickery, halflings are not inherently evil¿but they are opportunists. Many are simply practical thieves, taking what they need to survive or thrive. In cities, they pick pockets and run scams, while in the wild, they live as scouts, rangers, or sneaky mercenaries. Some halflings even become respectable merchants¿but most only stay "respectable" as long as it suits them. The halfling¿s greatest joy is a full belly, a warm fire, and a strong drink. They detest unnecessary work, preferring to trick, outsmart, or charm others into doing it for them. However, when pushed into a fight, halflings are ferocious in their own way¿not through brute force, but through speed, misdirection, and well-placed strikes. They are rarely warriors, as their small frames lack raw strength, but they are unmatched in stealth and deception. In Derlith, if you hear the clink of missing coins or feel a dagger at your back, chances are¿a halfling is responsible. Physical & Mental Traits Halflings are short and often plump, standing around three to four feet tall. Unlike elves or humans, they tend to store a bit of extra weight, especially if they live a comfortable lifestyle. Their hands and feet are covered in tufts of hair, and they almost never wear shoes, preferring to walk barefoot for quiet movement and better grip. While physically weak, they are incredibly agile. Their small size and quick reflexes make them hard to hit, and their natural stealth abilities allow them to disappear in an instant. Mentally, halflings are cunning, adaptable, and charming. They know how to talk their way out of trouble, lie with a straight face, and convince bigger folk to underestimate them. They do not waste time on philosophy or deep thought - they are doers, not thinkers, always looking for the easiest and most rewarding path forward. Culture & Philosophy Halflings do not build great cities or wage wars. Instead, they thrive in the shadows of larger societies, living in human settlements, elven forests, or hidden rural villages. They are not conquerors, kings, or warlords¿they are survivors, tricksters, and opportunists. Despite their reputation as thieves, halflings are not always criminals. Many are traders, gamblers, or entertainers, using charm and wit to gain wealth instead of outright theft. However, most halflings are not above stealing when it suits them¿after all, why work when you can simply take what you need? Halflings have no use for honor, nobility, or politics. They do not pledge loyalty easily, preferring to look out for themselves and their closest friends or family. They are mischievous, but not reckless¿they always consider the risks before taking action, ensuring that if they cause trouble, they won¿t be the ones suffering for it. They tend to view larger races with amusement, particularly humans and dwarves, who take work, war, and honor far too seriously. To a halfling, life is meant to be enjoyed, and if someone else has to suffer a little to make that happen - well, that's just how things go. Halflings tend to worship Kamira, the goddess of luck, trickery, and fortune, believing that life is just one big gamble - and they intend to win.
